General James F. Amos, A Marine We Should Know

General James F. Amos USMC currently serves as the 31st Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps (ACMC). A Naval Aviator, General Amos has served in a variety of high level assigments including in combat as Commanding General of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
Graduating from the University of Idaho in 1970, General Amos was designated as a Naval Aviator in 1971. His initial assignments included a variety of tours with VMFA 212, VMFA 235, VMFA 232 and VMFA 122 as an F-4 Phantom II pilot. In 1985, as a LtCol, he commanded Marine Air Base Squadron 24.
General Amos transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet and assumed command of VMFA 312 wher he joined a Carrier Air Wing on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt. In 1996 he assued command of Marine Air Group 31 in Beaufort S.C..
He assumed Command of 3rd MAW during August of 2002 and then led the MAW in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom. General Amos served as the Commanding General of II Marine Expeditionary Force from July 2004 until July 2006.
General Amos has also served in a variety of Staff and Joint assignments including: The Basic School, MAG-15, with NATO, Deputy Commandant for Aviation and as the Commanding General Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC).
General Amos was nominated to succeed General James Conway as Commandant of the Marine Corps in July of 2010. When he assumes duty he will be the first Aviator to as Commandant.
